Chiasso is an important border municipality, the fifth municipality in the canton by number of inhabitants, it is an important sorting and transit centre, with its international railway station. Furthermore, it is home to two important customs offices thanks to which it has also become an economic and financial center of considerable importance. Chiasso is also famous for the Nebiopoli Carnival, organized since 1960, one of the most important carnivals in Italian Switzerland, Chiassodanza, a festival organized since 1989; Festate, a music event that takes place on a weekend usually in the last days of June, organized since 1991; ChiassoJazz, festival of jazz culture and music.
